Internet Services and Providers

The San Diego Broadband Initiative aims to make access to the Internet and web-based services via broadband affordable to everyone. We will continually monitor the availability of discounted services and provide our participants and partners with the latest information and developments.  To that end, we are seeking partnerships with Internet Service Providers (ISP) who are open to making broadband Internet more affordable for our program participants.

What is Broadband?

Broadband is a technical term that generally means "high-speed" Internet. An Internet connection is considered broadband or high speed if it delivers data at a speed of 256 kilobits per second minimum. That's more than 4 times faster than a dial-up modem. Most broadband connections are faster than 256kbps.

Broadband Internet service is available from your cable TV provider, your phone provider, and from specialty Internet Service Providers (ISP) who only offer Internet access, which may be wired or wireless. The two most common methods of getting broadband are cable and "DSL", which is usually offered by the phone company.

Cable versus DSL?

Cable and DSL are two different kinds of technology used to provide access to the Internet. Cable uses your TV cable line, DSL uses your telephone line. Which one is best for you? That depends on many things, including your budget, how you plan to use the Internet, and any experiences you've had with cable or phone providers. Below is information about Internet service providers who offer broadband in San Diego. There are many others but these are the most commonly used. Click the "read more" links to get the SDBI review and recommendations.
