The Road Runner application requires you to provide your name, address, phone number, and social security number. Time Warner will do a credit check, which will determine your actual monthly rate.

You can buy a cable modem, use one you already have,or recieve one at no additional cost from Time Warner. If you discontinue service and you're using a Time Warner cable modem you will have to return it. Time Warner offers a cable modem with wireless built in $9.95 per month. You can purchase a WiFi router at Best Buy for approximately $50 and skip the $9.95 fee.

There is a $35 dollar setup/installation fee in addition to the monthly service fee. As with other telecom services, there may be miscellaneous taxes and fees. There are no contracts so you can cancel your service and send your cable modem back any time.

A cable modem costs about $50 to purchase. A wireless router costs about the same. You can't beat a free cable modem rental but if you want WiFi in your house you're better off purchasing one somewhere rather than renting it. Time Warner's rates are a little bit higher than DSL but you'll probably get better performance. Is it worth it? For basic web surfing, and especially if you're on a budget, maybe not. Is it nice to have? Definitely.
